Chinese cars have outpaced their competitors: why did this happen?

In an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, expert Andrey Kogan analyzed the key advantages of Chinese cars over European ones, noting the rapid evolution of the Chinese auto industry over the past decade. According to him, the Chinese industry has come a long way, which took its European, Korean, and Japanese competitors decades to achieve.

The expert cites the speed of implementation of new technologies as the main advantage. While traditional brands take up to seven years to develop a platform and launch a model, Chinese manufacturers complete the process in an average of three years. This is achieved by reducing bureaucratic procedures and accelerating the decision-making process.

This dynamic is due to the specifics of the market itself. China is the largest automobile market in the world with a highly competitive domestic market. Manufacturers are forced to constantly improve technologies, enhance the quality of materials and improve comfort, while responsively responding to customer demands. For the end consumer, this means quick access to more modern models and no long waits for updates.

Digitalization and electrification

The progress of Chinese companies in the field of digital technologies deserves special attention. Unlike European and Asian cars, where a wide range of options is available only in expensive trim levels, buyers of Chinese cars receive modern equipment already in the base:

  • virtual instrument panel;
  • multimedia system with a large screen;
  • rear view camera, navigation;
  • a set of security systems and driver assistants;
  • telematic services for remote control of the car.

In addition, Chinese engineers are actively competing in the global market of electrified transport. Their developments in hybrid and electric vehicles allow them to create products with a respectable range and efficiency. Moreover, these technologies are already being adopted and used by established global brands.

Continued Competitive Advantages

Despite obvious progress, it is premature to speak of the complete technological superiority of the Chinese auto industry. European and Japanese manufacturers still have their strengths:

  • European brands still lead in the field of controllability, complex engineering solutions, durability of individual components and have extensive long-term experience.
  • Japanese companies maintain a reputation as leaders in reliability and quality of powertrain production.

Nevertheless, as the expert emphasizes, it is in the mass segment that the gap between Chinese manufacturers and their European and Japanese competitors is rapidly narrowing.
