Geely Atlas Pro reliability tested: here are the problems owners can expect after 100,000 km

The Geely Atlas Pro has long been a prominent Chinese crossover on the Russian market. The model was produced from 2019 to 2025, and in Russia it is also well known under another name—the Belgee X70. Today, the Atlas Pro is particularly interesting not as a new car, but as an option on the used market: prices for used cars look more attractive than a few years ago, but when choosing, it is important to consider the features of the engine, robotic transmission, and electronics.

The 4,544 mm long car was produced with front- and all-wheel drive. However, it was the all-wheel drive versions that received a more sophisticated powertrain with a mild hybrid and a starter-generator. According to expert Sergey Zinoviev, the model has some notable advantages, but it can’t be called trouble-free.

Strengths of the Geely Atlas Pro

The main advantage of the Atlas Pro is its fairly spacious interior. By the standards of compact crossovers, the car offers a decent amount of space for passengers, and the quality of the materials and the level of equipment distinguish it favorably from many competitors of the same period.

Another plus is the suspension. It copes well with bumpy roads and is capable of withstanding serious loads, which is especially important for operating a car in Russian conditions.

The Atlas Pro’s equipment also includes many modern solutions for its time. However, a large amount of electronics has a downside: with age, it is the electronic components that become one of the potential sources of expenses.

What may disappoint the owner

Among the model’s disadvantages is the ground clearance of 175 mm. For a city crossover, this is usually enough, but you shouldn’t count on serious off-road capabilities of the Atlas Pro.

Another feature is the lack of simple naturally aspirated engines and a manual transmission. All the power units here are quite complex, which means that it is especially important for the buyer of a used car to check not only the body and suspension, but also the service history of the engine and transmission.

There are also questions about ergonomics: the range of adjustment of the steering column for reach is limited, so not all drivers can find the optimal driving position.

The body requires special attention. When buying a used car, it is advisable to carefully inspect the paintwork, edges of parts, hidden cavities and areas of potential moisture accumulation. The body’s susceptibility to corrosion is one of the factors that cannot be ignored when choosing a used Atlas Pro.

Volvo turbo engine: good service life, but expensive repairs

Under the hood of the Atlas Pro is a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbo engine Volvo B3154T. Depending on the modification, its power is 150 or 177 hp.

The declared service life of the engine is estimated at approximately 250 thousand km, however, the mere presence of a long estimated service life does not necessarily mean cheap operation. The engine design is quite complex, so serious repairs can be expensive for the owner.

At relatively low mileage – up to 100 thousand km – individual problems may already arise. The starter-generator, seals, and also the intake tract are of particular interest.

The formation of carbon deposits on the intake valves is a particular problem. Over time, this can impair engine performance and increase oil consumption. Therefore, when buying a car with significant mileage, it is advisable to check not only the compression and errors in the electronic units, but also the actual condition of the intake system.

Which Atlas Pro is better to choose on the secondary market

Offer statistics show that approximately 76% of cars on the secondary market are all-wheel drive versions. They are equipped with a 7-speed robotic transmission with two wet clutches.

The robotic transmission itself, with proper maintenance, can last up to 300,000 km. However, this does not mean that the owner is guaranteed not to encounter costly repairs before this mileage.

After 100-150,000 km, the clutch, shaft bearings, and dual-mass flywheel may require attention. Therefore, it makes sense to buy a car with a mileage of about 150 thousand km or more only after a thorough diagnosis of the transmission.

It is especially important to evaluate the robotic operation when cold and after warming up: jerking, delays when engaging gears, extraneous sounds and unusual vibrations may indicate future expenses.

Front-wheel drive and Aisin: a simpler option?

Front-wheel drive Atlas Pro are equipped with a Japanese 6-speed automatic Aisin TF-72SC. Compared to the robotic transmission, this combination looks more attractive in terms of long-term operation.

The box is well known in the market and, with timely maintenance, is capable of demonstrating a long service life. Experts recommend paying attention to the unit’s operating temperature and considering installing an additional cooling radiator.

Therefore, the front-wheel drive version may be more attractive to buyers who don’t require all-wheel drive. It relieves the owner of some of the complexities associated with the mild hybrid system and robotic transmission.

Suspension is more reliable than electronics.

The Geely Atlas Pro’s chassis has proven itself to be quite good overall. The suspension is quite durable, and the braking system is also not one of the car’s main problem areas.

However, electronic components can cause more problems for owners. In particular, there are failures of cameras and parking sensors.

For a modern car, this is not a critical malfunction from the point of view of driving safety, but the cost of individual electronic components and their diagnostics can be an unpleasant surprise for the owner of a used crossover.

Is it worth buying a used Geely Atlas Pro

Geely Atlas Pro cannot be called an unequivocally unreliable car , but it requires a more careful choice than simple naturally aspirated crossovers with a classic automatic.

The model has its strengths: a spacious interior, good suspension, rich equipment and sufficiently resourceful main units with proper maintenance. However, a complex turbo engine, mild hybrid, dual-clutch automatic transmission, and extensive electronics all increase potential costs with age.

If all-wheel drive is not a requirement, a front-wheel drive Atlas Pro with an Aisin automatic transmission looks more reasonable on the used market. When choosing an all-wheel drive vehicle, special attention should be paid to the condition of the starter-generator, the operation of the automatic transmission, and the transmission’s consumable component replacement history.

In any case, buying such a car based solely on its appearance and odometer readings is not recommended. Before purchasing, it is advisable to conduct a comprehensive diagnostic of the engine, transmission, hybrid system, electronics, and body. For the Atlas Pro this is especially important: potential problems here are often associated not with one specific part, but with the high complexity of the car’s design.
