Testing of new generation traffic lights with animated pedestrians, text messages and illuminated crossings has begun in Minsk.
A pilot zone was launched on Turovskogo Street, near the First National Trading House shopping center. New transport and pedestrian traffic lights have already been installed there, as well as special signal buttons for pedestrians.
The main feature of the new traffic lights is an unusual screen. Instead of the usual static people, animated images are used here, and the traffic lights themselves can display text information.
In addition, additional lighting has been added to the approach areas near the crossings to make pedestrians more visible at night.
The State Traffic Inspectorate explained that this is only a test site for now. Specialists will test the effectiveness of the new equipment and how drivers and pedestrians react to it.
The setup and installation is being handled by the State Unitary Enterprise “SMEP Minsk City Executive Committee.” It is not yet known whether these traffic lights will appear in other areas of the city. However, if the experiment is deemed successful, similar systems may be installed on other streets of Minsk.
