A traffic police officer released a drunk driver for 30,000 rubles and received a nine-year prison sentence.

In Yekaterinburg, a harsh sentence was handed down to a traffic police officer who, for 30,000 rubles, let a driver with signs of intoxication go free. The court sentenced him to nine years in a maximum security penal colony.

On April 28, 2026, the Chkalovsky District Court of Yekaterinburg found a former traffic police officer guilty of accepting a bribe. According to investigators, the inspector and his partner demanded money from a driver who was stopped for signs of alcohol intoxication.

For 30,000 rubles, the man was promised a “blind eye” to the violation and no ticket would be issued.

But the driver decided not to remain silent. He recorded the conversation with the inspectors on a voice recorder, photographed the bills beforehand, and after handing over the money, contacted the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Internal Security Service.

Law enforcement officers detained the inspectors immediately after their shift—in the courtyard of the traffic police building. During a search, they found 30,550 rubles on one of them.

The court found the inspector guilty of accepting a bribe as part of a group of individuals for extortion. The punishment is 9 years’ imprisonment, a fine of 300 thousand rubles and a maximum security penal colony.

In addition, the former inspector was banned from holding government positions related to the exercise of power for 3 years and was stripped of the rank of senior police lieutenant.

He was taken into custody immediately after the verdict was announced – right in the courtroom.
