Market trends dictate their terms to manufacturers. Each car brand is trying to provide its model line with as many crossovers as possible. Mazda decided to keep up with its competitors. The Mazda 3 family, which left the Russian market, was replaced by the Mazda CX-30 crossover. Now, out of four Mazda models presented in Russia, three are crossovers. What is the new Mazda CX-30 crossover and what are its prospects, we tell you in our review.
Why CX-30?
Sales of the Mazda 3 hatchback in Russia were so meager that the management of the Japanese brand decided to abandon sales of this model in our country. In the first three quarters of 2020, only 417 people became owners of the new Mazda 3. The high cost of the model was explained by the fact that the car was imported to us, and therefore it was necessary to pay not only customs duties, but also a higher recycling fee. It got to the point that the top-end trim levels of the Mazda 3 hatchback were comparable in price to the Mazda 6 sedan.

For the Russian market, removing the Mazda 3 and replacing it with the Mazda CX-30 crossover is a more logical and promising solution. The model is built on the basis of the same “troika”, but received off-road potential. The crossover is assembled in Vladivostok at the Sollers plant, which made it possible to reduce the cost of the car for the end consumer. Why is the model called CX-30 and not CX-3? There is a logical explanation for this too. In 2015 In 2015, the CX-3 model, based on the more compact Mazda 2 hatchback, entered the European market. Bringing an older, and even smaller, model to the Russian market would have been foolish. A more recent Mazda CX-30 crossover was unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Initially, the model was to be called the CX-4, but a car with this index was already sold in China, so the new crossover received the designation CX-30. In the global lineup, it occupied a niche between the CX-3 and CX-5 models.

For those who couldn’t afford the CX-5
Representatives of the Russian office of Mazda say that the CX-30 crossover will be the model that will help the company increase sales in Russia. In fact, the Mazda CX-30 is intended for those who wanted to buy a CX-5, but for objective reasons I couldn’t do it. In terms of dimensions, the younger model is not much inferior to the older one. Mazda CX-30 is only 150 mm shorter than Mazda CX-5, and the difference in wheelbase is only 45 mm.

The new model is built on the Mazda 3 platform, which means it is unified with it in terms of main units and components. The CX-30’s interior is, of course, significantly smaller than that of the Mazda CX-5, but the crossover can’t be called particularly cramped. The front seats have good lateral support. During the presentation, Mazda representatives placed special emphasis on improved sound insulation. Extraneous noise does not penetrate into the cabin thanks to the two-zone door design, as well as the two-zone structure of the floor covering.

The front panel is turned towards the driver, and the instrument panel with analog scales received white backlighting. On the center console, in the very At the top, they stuck a multimedia system screen with a diagonal of 8.8 inches. Multimedia supports Apple Carplay and Android Auto interfaces. In addition, even in the basic configuration, the CX-30 has a projection on the windshield and a navigation system. The interior is almost completely borrowed from the Mazda 3. The trunk volume of the Mazda CX-30 is 295 liters. This is less than the CX-5 and its relative Mazda 3. A spare wheel is located under the trunk floor.

The ground clearance of the CX-30 is an impressive 180 mm. As for the suspension, the “thirty” has a semi-independent torsion beam at the rear, and a MacPherson strut in front. Multi-link rear suspension is not available to us, it is available in Europe on modifications with a 2.5-liter gasoline engine. In Russia, only one two-liter engine with a capacity of 150 horsepower will be available forces, which will work under the control of mechanics or automatic. The drive, depending on the configuration, is offered front or all-wheel drive.

Trim levels and prices
Even in the basic Drive configuration, the Mazda CX-30 has rich equipment. It has as many as seven airbags, LED headlights, ABS, EBD, TSC and DSC, the G-Vectoring Control Plus driving assistance system, rain and light sensors, a projection screen, an electric handbrake with the AutoHold function, multimedia with navigation and support for CarPlay and Android Auto. In all this diversity, the ordinary plastic steering wheel, the most basic air conditioner and stamped wheels with caps. The Drive package is only front-wheel drive.

Mazda is focusing on the mid-range Active package. It is expected to meet customer demand. Here, in addition to the basic features, there will be cruise control, a leather steering wheel and gear lever, heated front seats, automatic folding and heated side mirrors, climate control and 16-inch alloy wheels. A six-speed automatic transmission is available starting with the Active package.
The top-of-the-line Supreme package will receive all the features from the previous Active, but will also include electric front seats with memory for the driver’s seat, mirror memory, photochromic interior and left mirror, keyless entry system, steering column switches, front and rear parking sensors, and a camera rear view with dynamic markings, 18-inch alloy wheels, tinted rear windows and a start-stop system.
The full price list for the Mazda CX-30 crossover has not yet been published. All prices are promised to be made public in mid-December, when dealers begin accepting pre-orders. Official sales of the crossover start on January 15. For reference, the price of a single Active configuration with front-wheel drive is named. This car will cost 1,869,000 rubles. Given the current ruble exchange rate, the price tag is quite reasonable.
