The Nissan Teana, priced at 3.8 million rubles, challenges the Camry and Passat: where does the price difference lie?

The Nissan Teana has reappeared on the Russian market and immediately found itself in an unusual price niche. The sedan is offered for approximately 3.8 million rubles—almost a million less than some versions of the Toyota Camry and significantly cheaper than the Hyundai Sonata and Kia K5. At the same time, the Teana’s equipment feels like a higher-end car: leather upholstery, a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, and heated seats are included in the equipment list.

But this attractive price comes with an important caveat. The Teana is built around a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine producing 156 hp, front-wheel drive, and a continuously variable transmission. Therefore, comparing it with the Volkswagen Passat, Skoda Superb or Camry only by price is not entirely correct.

Nissan Teana for 3.8 million rubles: what the buyer gets

Teana is supplied to Russia through alternative channels, and the price of the Intelligent Ultra Comfort version starts at approximately 3.8 million rubles.

For this money, the buyer is promised quite rich equipment. The list includes a leather interior, heated seats for all seats, dual-zone climate control, adaptive cruise control, all-round cameras and electronic safety systems.

The recycling fee is also of particular importance. A specific version of the Teana is eligible for a preferential calculation, which helps keep the final price at around 3.8 million rubles.

However, the technical part of the sedan is rather conservative. The two-liter engine produces 156 hp, works together with a CVT, and the drive remains front.

It is the transmission that can become the main factor when choosing.

The Volkswagen Passat costs the same, but is designed differently

The Volkswagen Passat Pro in this version costs about the same – 3.8 million rubles. At first glance, the Teana appears to be a direct competitor to the German sedan.

But technically, the cars are noticeably different.

The Passat Pro is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine producing 160 hp and a 7-speed robotic gearbox. The Teana has a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine and a CVT.

This means a different character of the car. Passat relies on a small turbo engine and a robotic transmission, while Teana is focused on a more traditional power plant with a CVT.

At the same time, Passat Pro has its own arguments for equipment: among the declared equipment there is a panoramic roof, a projection display and wireless charging.

Skoda Superb is another option for about 3.85 million rubles

Skoda Superb is close to Teana in price. The price of the version under consideration starts at about 3.85 million rubles.

It uses a 1.4-liter engine with a capacity of 150 hp in conjunction with a robotic gearbox. The main difference is the body. The Superb is a liftback, so its practical luggage compartment may appeal to buyers who don’t like a classic sedan.

The Premium trim level includes a leather interior and dual-zone climate control.

Thus, for around 3.8–3.9 million rubles, the buyer already gets three completely different cars: a Japanese sedan with a CVT, a German sedan with a robotic transmission, and a European liftback with a robotic transmission.

Nissanteana3The Sonata and K5 are more expensive, but offer a classic automatic

If you absolutely need a car with a hydromechanical automatic, the choice is different.

The Hyundai Sonata in the configuration under consideration costs approximately 4.5 million rubles. Kia K5 – about 4.7 million. Both models use 2.0-liter engines producing 160 hp, front-wheel drive and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

It is the transmission that becomes the main argument in favor of these cars for a certain category of buyers.

The Kia K5 in the Noblesse trim level is declared to have ventilated seats, a surround-view camera and adaptive cruise control. For Sonata, the availability of a classic automatic transmission is also separately emphasized.

At the same time, the surcharge compared to Teana is hundreds of thousands of rubles.

Toyota Camry is almost a million more expensive

Toyota Camry in the Chinese specification is already in a different price zone – from 4.88 million rubles.

At the same time, in terms of equipment, Camry can compete with Teana: a projection display, all-round cameras, heated seats and adaptive cruise control are declared.

The Chinese version also received a hybrid power plant with a total capacity of 197 hp with a CVT and front-wheel drive.

It turns out to be an interesting situation: Teana is cheaper than Camry by about a million rubles, but the difference between them is not only in price. The buyer receives different powertrains, brand levels on the used market, and potentially different liquidity.

Why the advertised price isn’t the full value of the car

All of the listed cars are imported to Russia through alternative supply channels. According to Autonews, the versions of the Passat Pro, Sonata, K5, Camry, and Superb in question are imported from China.

Therefore, before purchasing, it’s important to check more than just the advertised price.

First of all, you should request the VIN, exact trim level, origin of the car, and warranty terms. Chinese versions of the same model may differ in the multimedia system, set of electronic assistants, interface languages and availability of individual functions.

It is worth clarifying separately who exactly provides the warranty and where the car will be serviced.

Teana is not a “killer” of all competitors

The main advantage of the Nissan Teana now seems obvious: for 3.8 million rubles, the buyer gets a large sedan with rich equipment and a fairly powerful engine for its class.

But you can’t call it an unconditional competitor to all of the listed models only by price.

  • Teana is logical to consider for those who care about:

    • spacious sedan;
    • rich Equipment;
    • Naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine;
    • CVT;
    • Front-wheel drive;
    • Relatively low entry price.

    If the priority is a robotic transmission, a practical liftback body or a classic automatic, the list of suitable models will be different.

    That is why the difference between 3.8 million and 4.8 million rubles should not be the only criterion. When buying an imported car, the transmission, availability of spare parts, warranty, maintenance costs and future liquidity are also important.

    On paper, the Nissan Teana really looks like one of the most interesting offers in its price category. But its main advantage is not an attempt to replace both the Camry and the Passat, but a combination of rich equipment and a relatively low price.
