In November, the official ŠKODA dealer in Rostav-on-Don, AAA Motors Center, started selling an updated version of the flagship SUPERB model. After the update, the new model received a number of innovative functions that were previously available on higher-class cars. Along with the new model, the previous SUPERB is also available for purchase. We decided to compare the differences between these two cars.
What has changed in the appearance
At first glance, it will not be easy to distinguish the new model from the previous generation. The changes in appearance are minimal, but significant. There were no radical changes in the appearance of the SUPERB. This is good, since the previous Superb model will not lose its relevance. It is important to understand that this is not a completely new generation, but a restyling. The designers have refreshed the exterior of the SUPERB liftback. The false radiator grille has increased in size and received larger chrome strips.
The front bumper after restyling can be recognized by the new, more aggressive shape of the LED fog lights. On the trunk lid, instead of the logo, the inscription ŠKODA now flaunts in large letters – right in the center. This is not even a stylistic solution, but rather a marketing ploy aimed at brand recognition. Large letters on the trunk lid will now be not only for the Superb model, but also for all new ŠKODA models.
After the update, the Superb received 18-19-inch alloy wheels of a new design and new body colors – blue Race Blue and black Crystal Black. But the main difference between the updated SUPERB and the one that could be bought from a dealer a couple of months ago is the new optics. The lighting has changed not only at the front, but also at the rear. Although the shape of the headlights has not changed, they are completely new. Now the head optics have become matrix, and the rear lights are LED with the function of dynamic turn signals. The headlights operate in several modes, the choice of which depends on various weather and road conditions, for example, for driving in the city, on the highway or in the rain. The headlights consist of LED modules for low beam, matrix modules for high beam and three additional LED modules, which are also used for high beam. Narrow LED strips are used as turn indicators, daytime running lights and parking lights. Additional ultra-thin strips are used in the animated Coming / Leaving Home function.
When cornering, other LED elements are activated, which change the direction of the light flow depending on the conditions. When turning sharply at low speed, the new LED fog lights are also used, each of which consists of four segments. Visually united by a chrome strip, the rear all-LED lights are equipped with dynamic turn signals, in which the LEDs light up sequentially from the inner to the outer part. This makes them more visible to other road users
What’s new in the interior
The updated Superb meets with an improved KESSY keyless access system. Now you can open not only the front, but also the rear doors by touch. Also, the Superb has added the ability to open the trunk lid with a foot movement. For the first time, the KESSY GO system with an engine start button is offered for the model.
The interior has new seat trim and decorative inserts, as well as higher-quality materials; on top-end versions, you can even order a ceiling trimmed in Alcantara.
An enlarged box for a phone with a wireless phone charging function and the ability to connect to a multimedia system has appeared on the center console. Otherwise, it is the same familiar SUPERB with comfortable seats and ideal landing geometry. Also, the interior has multi-colored decorative lighting – a small thing, but nice. For all body variants of the ŠKODA SUPERB, a digital instrument panel and three multimedia systems with displays with a diagonal of 8 and 9.2 inches are offered. Two of them are equipped with a navigation system, and the latest version of the Columbus can recognize gestures and voice commands. Finally, for the new
ŠKODA SUPERB, about 30 solutions in the spirit of Simply Clever are available. The graphics of the multimedia system and instrument panel are made in the traditional ŠKODA style, in particular, the symbols on the speedometer and tachometer are located in a circle. An original solution is the backlight when opening the doors, now the ŠKODA inscription is projected onto the asphalt with light.
Separately, it is worth mentioning the new driver assistance systems in the arsenal of the updated Superb. The new adaptive cruise control is able to automatically maintain the speed of up to 210 km / h depending on the speed of the car in front and, if necessary, can completely stop the ŠKODA SUPERB. Within three seconds after stopping, the adaptive system can automatically accelerate the car again. The Side Assist blind spot monitoring system now has a range of up to 70 m and warns the driver about cars that are in the blind spot or approaching in the adjacent lane.
Engines
At the initial stage of sales, the updated SUPERB is available with only one engine – a 2.0 TSI turbo engine with a displacement of two liters and a power of 190 horsepower. This engine should replace the petrol “four” 1.8 TSI, which produces 180 horsepower.
Depending on the configuration, the car with two-liter engines can be equipped with a six-speed or seven-speed transmission. However, the best option for the Russian consumer will most likely be the version with a two-liter engine with a capacity of 190 horsepower.
It will be in the main demand. Such a car is optimal in terms of dynamic characteristics, does not fall under the conditions of increased transport tax and is distinguished by good economy. In the combined cycle, the 190-horsepower SUPERB consumes 6.4 liters per 100 kilometers. In the basic version, the ŠKODA Superb will have a 1.4 TSI engine with a capacity of 150 hp. and a manual transmission, this engine is also available with a seven-speed DSG gearbox. But models with a basic engine should appear in the updated ŠKODA Superb lineup only from 2020. For now, only the pre-restyling version of the SUPERB can be ordered with a 1.4 TSI engine from the official dealer “AAA Motors West”. Also, from the new year, Superb models with two-liter engines with a capacity of 220 and 280 horsepower will be available for order. The most powerful version will also be equipped with all-wheel drive.
How much does it cost
Buyers are now offered a choice of SUPERB in two body styles – a liftback and a station wagon. As for the trim levels, there are three of them – Ambition, Style and Laurin & Klement. The Ambition version includes six airbags, dual-zone climate control, a media system, heated front seats, rear parking sensors, light and rain sensors, a collision warning system and 16-inch wheels. The Style package adds a driver’s knee airbag, an electric driver’s seat, heated rear seats, front parking sensors, cruise control, an electric fifth door and 17-inch wheels. And the Laurin & Klement version is a rich leather interior trim, electric front seats, side airbags in the second row, a Canton audio system, adaptive shock absorbers and a lane keeping system. The basic Active package will appear in 2020. Prices for the updated SUPERB start at 2,097,000 rubles for a liftback model and from 2,210,000 rubles for a station wagon.
