Driving at night with non-working brake lights or tail lights is dangerous for both you and other drivers on the road. You may not immediately notice that your tail lights are faulty and it may take a long time before you find out.
Tail lights are essential for road safety. If any of them are not working, other drivers behind you will not know whether you are moving or not. This can lead to serious accidents, especially on dark streets or during heavy rain, snow and fog. Traffic police may also stop you if they see you driving with non-working taillights.
Reasons why brake lights do not work, but taillights do:
This is a fairly common problem when you are driving, the taillights may work fine, but when you press the brake, the brake lights do not respond. Sometimes, when you press the brake, the taillights do not come on either, and they do not come on until you release the brake pedal.
Bulbs
Burned out bulbs are the most common reason for signals and headlights not working. Remove the screws and remove the lenses (you can access them through the trunk, or consult your vehicle repair manual for the exact location). Press on the bulbs and turn them counterclockwise to remove them.
You need to replace the bulbs if they are darkened or the filaments are broken. Choose new bulbs of the same type and wattage. In most European cars, the same bulb performs the work of the reverse and brake lights. Such a bulb has double filaments, which allows them to work independently of each other.
Fuse Box and Brake Light Switch on the Brake Pedal
You need to find the fuse or Power Distribution Center (PDC). You will find the fuse panel under the dashboard and the PDC under the hood. The brake light switch is also under the dashboard and you can gently check if it touches the brake pedal lever. Any problem with the fuse box and switch will affect the operation of the warning lights. If the fuse is blown, replace it with a new one. Remember that the new one must have the same amperage as the old one. Also, try to find out the reason why the fuse burned out. Otherwise, it will burn out again. If the brake light switch is working properly, you need to check for poor electrical grounding (on some car models, the switch is equipped with a ground). This could be due to a loose wire connection or oxidation of the wire ends. Connect the switch to a reliable ground with a jumper wire and press the brake pedal. If the brake light comes on, then the problem is in the grounding. If all of the above components are working properly, there may be a problem with the wiring. The wiring from the fuse panel to the brake light switch and from the switch to the sockets and headlights, the wiring may be worn out. The connection and the lamp housing may be subject to corrosion. You need to replace these parts. The brake light circuit may be part of the turn signal circuit in some vehicle models. The brake light will not work if the switch is damaged or faulty. Check the electrical circuit of the switch and find the single wire that establishes a connection between the brake light and the turn signal switches. Access the electrical connector of the turn signal switch, turn on the brake light switch by pressing the brake pedal and test the wire with a test light. If the test light does not light, you will need to replace this wire. The tail lights and headlights have separate connections. So one set of headlights will still work, while the other set may have some problems and not work. There are several reasons why the tail lights may go out, and they are almost the same as the reasons why the brake lights do not work while the tail lights work. If you still cannot determine the problem with the non-functioning brake lights or tail lights or are not sure what to do, contact a professional auto repair shop.
