Пять способов повредить автомобиль

Your engine needs proper maintenance if you want it to stand the test of time. Here are a few pitfalls to avoid when operating your car.

Damaging your car isn’t as hard as you might think – and it doesn’t always involve driving too fast or carelessly. You can cause serious damage to your beloved machine through simple neglect. Here are five things you should be especially careful about if you want your car to last a long time.

Keeping Your Car’s Oil Levels

Oil is the lifeblood of any engine. If you let it dry out, various parts of your car will be starved of lubrication, causing serious damage. Conversely, putting too much oil in can also cause serious problems. Put too much in and you risk getting oil on parts where it shouldn’t be. Unless the engine has been turned over and the oil has already been applied, the only solution is to have your car towed to a garage where the oil can be drained.

Check your oil level regularly. If you wait until the light comes on on your dashboard, it may be too late.

Water and car electrics don’t mix.

If you leave a window or sunroof open during a rainstorm and water starts leaking onto the dials and switches, you’re in for trouble. This is important to keep in mind, even if everything seems fine on the outside. You should also avoid flooded roads, as driving in very deep water can cause water to be sucked into the air intake and directly into the piston chamber. In just a few seconds, significant damage can be caused and you will need a new engine.

Always lift your car with extreme caution

This may seem like a simple task. But if you lift your car by or on anything other than the recommended method, you can easily damage the sills. Also, make sure the car is on a solid surface and not on soft ground or gravel. The jack can come off and damage your car. You should also be careful when driving over curbs – many places use curbs with sharp edges that can easily damage the tires.

Be careful when starting the engine

Never start a car without first learning the procedure. Many modern cars have sensitive control units and a sudden surge in power can cause serious damage. Similarly, in some cars the immobiliser can be damaged if the key is in the ignition at the time. If this happens, it will erase the key, rendering it useless. This means you will not be able to drive the car until you reprogram it.

Cold weather can damage your car

Pouring a kettle of hot water on a frozen windscreen may seem like a quick fix, but it can also lead to cracks in the glass and cost you a lot of money. The easiest way to avoid this is to turn on the heaters inside the car and spray the outside with de-icer.

A related problem is the windscreen wipers. Chances are you tried to turn them on while they were still frozen to the glass. Since the motor that drives them will be pushing hard, this can cause the fuse to blow. It is not expensive, but certainly unpleasant.
