More and more people are starting to save on just about everything as the cost of living continues to rise, with high prices for electricity, water, and gas forcing families to find ways to reduce their consumption – for example, taking shorter and more efficient showers, turning off lights unless absolutely necessary, and even sometimes forgoing the use of air conditioning at the expense of their comfort.
The cost of owning a family car is also at an all-time high, especially when you consider that the price of fuel is hovering around the highest it has ever been. But just like saving on utilities, there are also ways to minimize the amount of gas your car uses and, more importantly, save money.

Tip #1: Your Right Foot
Unsurprisingly, the first gas saving tip doesn’t relate to the vehicle in general, but to your right foot and how you use it 🙂 The way you drive your car can have a big impact on your overall gas economy.
For starters, if you take off from stoplights full throttle or faster than most, you’re likely wasting gas. On the other hand, it’s also important to remember that every time you use your brakes, you’re literally burning money. Think about it—you burned a certain amount of fuel (energy) to reach a certain speed, and when you need to slow down, the brakes on your car absorb that speed and convert it into energy. This is speed you paid for with your wallet. And while it would be foolish (and dangerous) not to use the brakes on your car, you can use this knowledge to adjust your driving style.
For example, if you notice that a traffic light ahead is about to turn red, don’t accelerate to quickly approach the light and then brake just before it turns red. Instead, try accelerating earlier and letting your car gradually slow down as you get closer. This has two benefits. First, you’re using engine braking (instead of your actual brakes) to slow the car down, which uses virtually no fuel. And secondly, before you get there, the light may change to green, which means you can just continue on your way.

Tip #2: Check Your Tire Pressure
Checking your tire pressure is another simple way to save your car’s fuel, but unfortunately, many drivers don’t do it on a regular basis. If your tire pressure is low, you will increase the drag of the tires as the car moves on the road and this will have a negative impact on your car’s fuel economy. Inflate your car’s tires to the required pressure using an air pump at your local gas station. It will cost you practically nothing.

Tip #3: Lose Excess Weight
Get rid of anything unnecessary in your car or in your vehicle. Every kilogram of weight removed from a car will have a positive impact on fuel economy. How? Well, it’s actually quite simple – less weight means your engine will work less hard to get the car up to speed and maintain it. Oh, and that’s a great incentive for the driver to lose weight too 😉

Tip #4: Replace your engine air filter
The air filter is the first and last line of defense, protecting your engine from all the dust and dirt kicked up by other vehicles on the road. After a while, it will inevitably clog and stop functioning properly. Therefore, it is a good idea to change your air filter at least once a year to ensure that your engine can achieve the optimal air/fuel ratio.

Tip #5: Maintain Your Car
Here is another thing you should do at least once a year – either service your car yourself or have it inspected by professionals at a nearby auto repair shop. You may not see any significant improvement after your checkup, but at least you will have peace of mind knowing that your car has fresh oil circulating in its engine and that all engine parts are working properly and reliably, all of which will help extend the life of your car and improve your gas mileage.
What do we expect?
Depending on the type of car you drive and the condition it is in, if you follow the tips above, you could actually see a fuel savings of at least 10%. However, the most important thing to remember is that it’s not just your vehicle that needs improvement – it may take time for you, the driver, to change old habits that can harm and hinder you and your car. Good luck on the road!
