Every driver knows that a broken timing belt or chain can lead to serious engine damage, such as bent valves, which requires expensive overhauls. However, some engines are designed to minimize such damage. In an interview with naavtotrasse.ru, an engine engineer spoke in detail about such engines.
There are engines with recesses on the pistons that prevent severe damage to the valves when they come into contact with the piston. Such engines are called “non-stick”. These include, for example, Russian 8-valve engines produced since 2018, as well as engines installed on Kia Rio, Hyundai Solaris and some Toyota models.
Nevertheless, even the presence of recesses does not provide a 100% guarantee of protection. Sometimes the valves still bend when in contact with the piston. The specialist recommends studying the design features of the engine and replacing the timing belt or chain in a timely manner.
Usually the belt is changed every 80-120 thousand kilometers, and the chain – every 150-200 thousand. However, the replacement interval depends on the operating conditions of the car. It is better to replace it 10-20 thousand kilometers earlier than indicated in the manufacturer’s recommendations.
