Despite its image as a reliable and dynamic vehicle, Mazda owners are increasingly reporting issues such as corrosion susceptibility, Skyactiv transmission malfunctions, unstable multimedia system operation, and engines throwing a P0300 error. Tarantas News journalists analyzed what to watch out for when buying a Mazda.
Mazda is often associated with the “Japanese BMW” for its attractive design, affordability, and driving pleasure. However, judging by owner reviews and data from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), cars of this brand have a number of established problems that persist from generation to generation. Tarantas.News published a list of such weak points.
The most common problem is corrosion. Mazda3 and Mazda6 models produced in the 2000s and 2010s are particularly vulnerable, with rust appearing on suspension components, wheel arches, and subframes. Despite the zinc coating, the metal quickly deteriorates in regions with active use of anti-icing agents.

Another unpleasant issue is the “melting” instrument panels in Mazda3 and Mazda6 models produced between 2009 and 2013. When exposed to sunlight, the plastic became sticky and created glare, impairing visibility. The manufacturer even extended the warranty period to 10 years for the replacement of defective parts.
There are frequent complaints about the Mazda Connect multimedia system, which can freeze, give errors in Apple CarPlay, and refuse to accept voice commands. Additionally, many owners report issues with the Skyactiv transmission, which sometimes jerks or prevents the car from moving.
Skyactiv-G engines are prone to carbon deposits over time, which leads to reduced power and the P0300 error code. There are also complaints about early versions of engines with the VVT system, in which the valve timing adjusters often fail.
Finally, Mazda has been criticized for its insufficiently durable paintwork. The signature Soul Red paint looks impressive, but it scratches and peels easily.
Mazda is still considered one of the most reliable car brands, but owners emphasize the need for extra care to keep the car in perfect condition.
