South Korean company Samsung has patented a technology for self-healing smartphone components, reports Digital Trends.
The patent for the invention was found in the database of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and registered in October. In the document, the company’s engineers described a method for creating glass intended for use in foldable devices. The main feature of the new protective material is the ability to self-heal after damage.
According to the description, such glass can be used in the main and front cameras, as well as in the hinge area where the screen folds. The material consists of a multilayer structure that reacts to microcracks: when they occur, a self-healing reaction is triggered.
In addition, the glass is equipped with special grooves filled with sealant. If a crack forms, the sealant flows into the damaged area, preventing dust and moisture from entering. This technology is expected to help improve the durability and reliability of foldable smartphones by protecting their most vulnerable elements.
