Land Cruiser Analogue: Development of an SUV Based on the Kia Tasman Pickup Has Begun

Kia plans to expand its lineup by releasing a new frame SUV built on the platform of the Tasman pickup truck. This was announced by the vice president of the company’s mid-size car division, Don Hoon Kang.

The future model should compete with such SUVs as the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Ford Everest, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Isuzu MU-X. The project is currently under discussion, and its launch will depend on demand in key overseas markets – Australia, the Middle East, South Africa and South America.

The SUV is expected to have a shortened wheelbase compared to the Tasman and offer a seven-seater interior with three rows of seats. The ladder frame design will provide high strength and excellent off-road qualities, which will allow the new product to confidently compete in the utility SUV segment.

According to Kia Australia Product Planning Manager Roland Rivero, the success of the project will directly depend on international interest, since the Australian market alone is not enough to launch production.

Details about the design and technical characteristics have not yet been disclosed. However, the use of the Tasman platform will speed up development. The pickup is equipped with a 2.2-liter turbodiesel (200 hp, 441 Nm) or a 2.5-liter petrol engine (278 hp, 429 Nm) paired with a six-speed or eight-speed automatic. Probably, the new SUV will receive similar engines, adapted for SUV, with all-wheel drive and high ground clearance.
