“AvtoVAZ updated LADA Niva Travel. The restyled SUV, which received a more modern front end, improved brakes and a new engine with a modified gearbox, has been shown to the public more than once: at the SPIEF in June, the Innoprom exhibition in Yekaterinburg and the concern’s Open Day in Tolyatti.

The easiest way to recognize the updated “Niva Travel” is externally. The transformed SUV is immediately given away by new all-LED optics, a modified front bumper and a completely different, more practical radiator grille, which, in addition to the new design, received air flow guides and an increased flow section, designed to improve engine cooling in difficult operating conditions.

The interior of the car at “AvtoVAZ” has not yet been changed, but they have thoroughly worked on the “technology”. The main change was the engine – the place under the hood was taken by an 8-valve 90-horsepower naturally aspirated engine with a volume of 1.8 liters, created on the basis of units from front-wheel drive LADA models. In particular, it uses a cylinder block similar to the block of the 122-horsepower 1.8 Evo engine, from which the crankshaft and piston casting were also taken. In addition, an 8-valve cylinder head is used, which is widely used on 8-valve LADA engines.

The intake, exhaust, fuel supply and cooling systems in this engine have been specially adapted for Niva Travel. As a result, compared to the current 83-horsepower naturally aspirated 1.7:
the maximum power has been increased by 7 hp. (from 83 to 90 hp);
maximum torque increased by 24 Nm, and already at low speeds (about 1000 rpm) the torque increased by 27 Nm, which improves traction characteristics;
specific fuel consumption decreased by 3-30% depending on conditions.

The transmission remained the VAZ five-speed manual, but it had to be separately adapted for the new engine. Part of this adaptation were:
new differential half-axle gears;
new differential satellites; new rear axle half-shafts;
changed secondary shaft 5th gear pinion;upgraded reverse and 5th gear block;changed clutch housing;upgraded front and rear bridge. But that’s not all. Among other things, the updated LADA Niva Travel received a modified front suspension. For the sake of reliability and improved ride smoothness, engineers have implemented a more rigid front gearbox mount, and the stabilizer, which now has new brackets, was moved to the front of the car’s suspension, which improved steering wheel feedback and increased controllability.
The front hub roller bearing was replaced with a double-row ball bearing, which freed service technicians from the need to adjust the clearances of the SUV’s bearing. The steering knuckle has also been changed: stability under braking has been improved (negative rolling shoulder), and the knuckle dimensions have been reduced.

Finally, a separate layer of improvements to the updated LADA Niva Travel affected the “brake unit”, which, according to AvtoVAZ representatives, in 2026, together with a new 90-horsepower 1.8-liter engine, an improved five-speed gearbox and front suspension, will completely migrate to the Niva Legend. We are talking, first of all, about single-piston front ventilated brake discs of increased diameter with a caliper from the “passenger” LADA Vesta.
“We will try to unify a number of components as much as possible, because this is justified from the point of view of economics, and in terms of maintainability and other properties,” said an AvtoVAZ representative during the company’s technical seminar.
Earlier, AvtoNovosti Dnya learned that the localization level of the restyled LADA Niva Travel is 95%. As the director of product programs and projects of the company Oleg Grunenkov told us, the bridges for it, the engine, gearbox and transfer case are manufactured directly at AvtoVAZ.
