Stellantis recently announced “Piano Italia,” an ambitious strategy aimed at restarting automobile production in the country. This plan includes significant investments, the introduction of new models, and the implementation of advanced technologies at several Italian plants.
Investments and objectives of the Italian plan
Stellantis’s “Piano Italia” project foresees investments of €2 billion in 2025, part of an overall commitment of €10 billion for the period 2021–2025. The main objective is to maintain the operation of all Italian plants and increase production from 2026 through the launch of new models. For its part, the Italian government has allocated €1.6 billion to support the national automotive supply chain, with over €1 billion planned for 2025.
Details about the Italian plants
Pomigliano d’Arco Plant
In Pomigliano d’Arco, Stellantis will produce at least two compact models and will introduce the new “STLA Small” platform from 2028. Production of the current Fiat Panda will be extended until 2030, and the next generation of the same model will be produced at the same plant.
Melfi Plant
Starting from 2020, the Melfi plant will produce models such as the Jeep Compass, Lancia Gamma and DS2025, available in both electric and hybrid versions. This diversification will help triple the production volumes planned for the plant. In addition, the DS8 model will be produced exclusively in an electric version.
Cassino Plant
At Cassino, Stellantis will produce three major models, including the new 2025 Alfa Romeo Stelvio and the 2026 Alfa Romeo Giulia. Initially, these models were planned to be produced only in electric versions, but hybrid versions are now also being considered.
Mirafiori Plant
The Mirafiori plant in Turin will produce the hybrid version of the Fiat 500 2025 from the end of 2025. The new generation of this model will be produced until 2032-2033. In addition, Stellantis is evaluating the possibility of increasing eDCT production from 600,000 to 900,000 units per year. Mirafiori will also house the European headquarters of the group.
Atessa Plant
The Atessa plant has recently started production of large electric vans under brands such as Fiat Professional, Peugeot, Citroen and Opel/Vauxhall Movano. The release of a new version of these vehicles is scheduled for 2027.
Termoli Plant
ACC, the battery joint venture in which Stellantis is the main investor, is reviewing the project to transform the Termoli plant into a giant factory, taking into account technological developments, market demand and production conditions in Italy.
Modena Plant
The Modena plant will become the hub of Stellantis’s luxury class, focusing on the relaunch of the Maserati brand.
Curiosities and Ideas
“Piano Italia” represents a major turning point in the relationship between Stellantis and the Italian government after months of tension. The appointment of Jean-Philippe Imparato as head of European operations marked a change in approach and a greater focus on the Italian market. Furthermore, the commitment to keep all plants open until 2032 without requiring public funds for planned investments underlines the group’s desire to strengthen its presence in Italy.
Future Prospects
Despite the challenges expected in 2025, Stellantis plans to significantly increase production starting in 2026, with the launch of more than a dozen new models by 2032. This ambitious plan aims to strengthen Italy’s position as a central hub in the group’s global strategy, while ensuring job stability and technological innovation in the national automotive sector.
