RAM Ramcharger: A Revolutionary Electrified Future
The automotive sector is undergoing an epochal transformation, with electrification at the center of major manufacturers’ strategies. In this context, RAM, a Stellantis brand, announced the new RAM 1500 Ramcharger, a pickup truck that combines an electric powertrain with a gasoline range-extender, promising unprecedented performance and autonomy.
The RAM 1500 Ramcharger is designed on the Stellantis STLA Frame platform, specifically developed for large electric vehicles with a body-on-frame design. This versatile architecture supports pure electric, hybrid, and range-extended configurations, providing flexibility in the design and production of vehicles.
The heart of the Ramcharger is a liquid-cooled battery with a capacity of 92 kWh, which powers two electric motors: a front one with an output of 250 kW and a rear one with an output of 238 kW. This configuration guarantees a total output of 663 hp. and torque of over 834 Nm, allowing the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds. To increase range, the Ramcharger is equipped with an onboard generator with a capacity of 130 kW, powered by a 6.0-liter Pentastar V3.6 engine, which converts mechanical energy into electricity to recharge the batteries while driving.
This hybrid solution allows the Ramcharger to travel a total range of up to 1,110 km, eliminating the need for charging, which is typical for electric vehicles. Additionally, the bi-directional charging system allows the Ramcharger to power other electric vehicles or return energy to the home grid, increasing the vehicle’s versatility.
The towing and cargo capabilities of the Ramcharger are equally impressive. With a maximum towing capacity of 13,500 pounds and a payload of up to 2,600 pounds, the Ramcharger ranks first in its category, making it ideal for professional and recreational use that require high performance and reliability.
Stellantis’ decision to delay the launch of the Ramcharger, scheduled for the first half of 2025, compared to the all-electric RAM 1500 REV model, which has been pushed back to 2026, reflects the current market dynamics. Demand for pure electric vehicles is slowing, while interest in hybrid solutions offering greater autonomy and flexibility is growing. This strategic shift aims to meet consumer needs by offering a product that combines the benefits of an electric vehicle with the convenience of an internal combustion engine.
The RAM 1500 Ramcharger represents a significant step towards the electrification of the brand, while maintaining the power, capacity, and reliability characteristics that have made RAM pickups world famous. With advanced technology and innovative design, the Ramcharger is designed to redefine the standards in the electrified pickup segment, offering a concrete solution to sustainable mobility challenges without sacrificing performance.
