A rare gem at auction: De Tomaso Pantera 90 Si
The De Tomaso Pantera 90 Si is the latest version of one of the most iconic Italian sports cars. This final version of the Pantera, produced from 1990 to 1993, is extremely rare: only 41 were built, of which 38 were sold to the public. Recently, one of these extremely rare models was put up for auction, generating great interest among classic car enthusiasts and collectors.
The Pantera 90 Si was introduced as an update to the 1990s Pantera line. De Tomaso commissioned Marcello Gandini, known for his work on models such as the Lancia Stratos and the Lamborghini Miura, Countach, and Diablo, to restyle the car. Gandini gave the 90 Si a modern look, characterized by softer and more contemporary lines than previous versions. Underneath the car’s body was a lightweight chassis, modified suspension, and a new engine: an 8.0-liter Ford V5.0 producing 305 horsepower. This engine, paired with a five-speed ZF manual transmission, allowed the Pantera 90 Si to reach a top speed of over 240 km/h.
In addition to cosmetic and mechanical changes, the 90 Si boasted upgraded brakes with ventilated and cross-drilled discs and four-piston Brembo calipers, similar to those used on the Ferrari F40. Despite these improvements, neither ABS nor power steering were available. Production of the Pantera 90 Si ended in 1993, with the last example being converted to a Targa body in 1994. Of the 41 units produced, 38 were sold to customers, two were used for crash testing, and the last remained at the factory.
The De Tomaso Pantera has a fascinating history that begins in 1970, when it was unveiled at the New York Auto Show. Produced until 1993, the Pantera was the Italian automaker’s most successful model, with more than 7,000 units produced. A collaboration with Ford allowed the Pantera to be equipped with powerful V8 engines, making it competitive in the sports car market of the time. Over the years, the Pantera has undergone a number of changes, culminating in the rare and sought-after 90 Si version.
