MG, the historic British car brand now owned by Chinese giant SAIC, has announced a major breakthrough in the electric vehicle sector: the introduction of semi-solid state batteries in its new model, scheduled for release in 2025.
MG Announces Semi-Solid State Battery for New 2025 Model
Semi-solid state batteries are an evolution of today’s lithium-ion batteries. These new batteries replace the liquid electrolyte with a semi-solid gel, offering advantages in terms of energy density, safety and charging speed. The technology is positioned as a bridge to future solid-state batteries, which are still in development.
Advantages of Semi-Solid Batteries
Semi-solid batteries offer higher energy density, allowing electric vehicles to have a longer driving range. Furthermore, their design reduces the risk of overheating and fire, improving overall safety. An additional benefit is the ability to charge faster, significantly reducing downtime during trips.

MG’s transition to semi-solid batteries may result from synergies with other SAIC Group brands. For example, IM Motor, also part of the conglomerate, recently unveiled the L6 electric sedan, equipped with a 133 kWh semi-solid battery capable of providing a range of over 1,000 km on the CLTC cycle and adding 400 km of range in just 12 minutes of charging.

The introduction of this technology could put MG ahead of rivals such as Toyota and BMW, which do not plan to introduce solid-state batteries until 2027–2030. However, these batteries will likely be initially available in higher-end models and then, as production costs fall, will be rolled out to more affordable cars.

The introduction of semi-solid battery packs represents a significant step towards more efficient and safer electric mobility. Increased energy density and shorter charging times could help overcome some of the key barriers to mass adoption of electric vehicles, such as range anxiety and the length of charging stops.
MG Announces Semi-Solid-State Battery for New 2025 Model
MG’s announcement marks a significant milestone in the electric vehicle industry. If the company can deliver on its promises, it will be able to strengthen its position in the global electric vehicle market by offering vehicles with advanced performance and promoting the spread of innovative technologies in the sector.
