Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new generation of the compact SL convertible, developed with the participation of engineers from the AMG division.
For the first time since 1954, the SL model has been completely developed by AMG, as the convertible has become part of the sports line. The new model will replace the AMG GT Roadster supercar in the line. The construction of the convertible uses aluminum, stainless steel, and magnesium.
Thanks to the use of different materials, the body has become 18% more rigid. The new SL has a folding fabric roof weighing only 26 kilograms. The roof retracts and unfolds in just 15 seconds at speeds of up to 50 km/h. The central element of the front section is the Panamericana radiator grille with vertical slats.
The interior features a 12.3-inch virtual instrument panel and a multimedia system with an 11.9-inch screen. The new Mercedes-Benz SL also features a head-up display with augmented reality, electrically adjustable seats, and an Air Scarf system that directs warm air to the driver and passenger’s neck area when the top is open.
The SL 55 convertible comes standard with a four-liter twin-turbo engine. It produces 475 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque. The top Mercedes-AMG SL 63 convertible received an engine of the same volume, but it produces 585 horsepower and 800 Nm of torque. Both engines are aggregated with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
The Mercedes-AMG SL 55 accelerates from zero to one hundred in 3.9 seconds, while the Mercedes-AMG SL does the same procedure in 3.6 seconds. The maximum speed is 295 and 315 km/h, respectively. The new product will go on sale only next year, prices will be announced later.
