The new LADA NIVA Bronto has a 90-horsepower engine: how does it differ from the regular Niva Legend?

AvtoVAZ has started production of the upgraded LADA NIVA Bronto, the most rugged off-road capable version of the Niva Legend SUV. The car has a new 1.8-liter engine, reinforced transmission components, and updated parts that were previously featured on the base Niva Legend. Bronto has retained its proprietary technical solutions designed for driving on mud, loose soil, and challenging off-road conditions.

LADA NIVA Bronto has a 90-hp engine.

The main technical change was the installation of a 1.8-liter gasoline engine. Its power output increased from 83 to 90 hp, and torque from 129 to 153 N m.

The gain is 7 hp and 24 N m. For an SUV focused not so much on high-speed driving, but on overcoming difficult terrain, an increase in torque is especially important. It potentially facilitates movement under load and at low speeds, although the actual capabilities of the car will also depend on the transmission ratios, tire traction and driver skill.

Along with the new engine, the LADA NIVA Bronto received reinforced transmission components. The equipment also includes galvanized body parts, a driver airbag and more effective brakes. These changes were previously implemented on the LADA NIVA Legend as part of the modernization in the summer of 2026.

How does Bronto differ from the regular Niva Legend

The main advantage of the Bronto is its special preparation for off-road conditions. The SUV is equipped with 235/75 R15 tires with developed lugs. Their outer diameter is approximately 29 inches.

Larger wheels help to overcome uneven surfaces and improve traction on loose surfaces. However, such rubber is not a universal advantage: on asphalt, the car’s behavior may differ from the characteristics of a standard road version, and fuel consumption and noise depend on the specific tires and operating conditions.

The front suspension and rear axle are reinforced. Limited-slip differentials are installed on both axles, and the final drive ratio is 4.1. In combination with all-wheel drive, these solutions should help the car maintain traction when driving on difficult terrain.

Limited-slip differentials redistribute torque between the wheels of one axle when one of them loses traction. This increases the chances of continuing to move where the usual distribution of traction would be less effective. However, self-locking does not completely replace forced locking: the result depends on the design of the mechanism and the conditions of contact of the wheels with the surface.

Updated design and additional protection

The exterior of the LADA NIVA Bronto also differs from the base model. The SUV received original bumpers, a radiator grille, wheel arch extensions and side skirts. These elements create a more massive appearance and emphasize the purpose of the car.

The protection of the power unit and transfer case has been additionally enhanced. This is a practical change for off-road use: the lower part of the car is more often exposed to impacts with stones, ruts and other obstacles.

At the same time, enhanced protection does not eliminate the need to consider ground clearance, the trajectory of movement and protruding elements of the underbody. On difficult off-road conditions, much depends not only on the vehicle’s design, but also on the road surface conditions, tire pressure, and the correct speed selection.

When will sales begin and how much will the NIVA Bronto cost?

AvtoVAZ has not yet disclosed the price of the updated LADA NIVA Bronto or the list of trim levels. Prices and equipment details are promised to be announced closer to the start of sales.

For buyers, it will be fundamentally important to compare not only the cost of the Bronto with the standard Niva Legend, but also the costs of subsequent operation. Specialized off-road tires, transmission and suspension maintenance, and warranty terms can significantly affect the final cost of ownership.

The update makes the NIVA Bronto more attractive to those who need a relatively compact SUV for hunting, fishing, traveling on forest roads, and working away from asphalt. However, for predominantly urban use, the additional off-road capabilities may prove excessive.

After the publication of the official price list, it will become clearer to what extent the surcharge for the special preparation of the Bronto is justified compared to the base LADA NIVA Legend.
