Warner Bros. Games is rebooting its biggest franchises: new DC and Harry Potter games

After the failed release of the co-op action game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League in early 2024, there were no high-profile projects from Warner Bros. Games. However, as the company noted, this is a temporary pause.

In 2025, the publisher experienced large-scale changes: the action game Wonder Woman was cancelled, three studios were closed, including Monolith Productions, and Warner Bros. itself. Games has restructured to focus on four key franchises: Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, DC and Mortal Kombat.

Warner Bros. Games CEO Jean-Briac Perrette said 2025 was the “year of reset” after a period in which the company tried to develop too many projects at once. In a call with investors, he emphasized that the new strategy is aimed at strengthening and developing core franchises at scale, rather than expanding the portfolio uncontrollably.

In 2026, the studio plans to release Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight (May 29) and the mobile Game of Thrones: Dragonfire. However, according to Perrette, “the real fruits of this effort will appear in 2027-2028, when we return to some of our biggest franchises.”

While the CEO did not name specific projects, experts assume that he is talking about the sequel Hogwarts Legacy, which was confirmed for the fall of 2024. The game, according to the company, is one of its priorities for the coming years and will be connected to the upcoming Harry Potter series from HBO, which is expected to premiere in early 2027.

Meanwhile, Rocksteady, the studio that developed Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, has taken on a new single-player project about Batman, but a release in the near future is unlikely, reports Bloomberg. Sources note that the project is in the early stages of development and is likely to be a large AAA action game with an open world and improved combat mechanics.

Industry experts believe that the strategy of Warner Bros. Games is showing a tendency to focus resources on proven franchises where the company can count on consistent success, rather than taking risks with new, untested projects. This decision reflects a general trend in the gaming industry: a gradual move away from excessive expansion and a focus on quality content with a large fan base.
