Stories of cars with a stuck gas pedal while driving sometimes appear in the news. This problem can occur at any time and in any place, so you need to be prepared for such a situation and know what to do.
A high-profile case occurred in America in 2012. Then, a 47-year-old woman’s gas pedal got stuck in her SUV while driving. Her car began to rapidly pick up speed, and in about half an hour the woman drove almost 100 km, accelerating to 195 km/h. Thank God it happened on a wide, expressway. In those 30 minutes, she found a way to unlock the gas pedal and stop her car.
So, let’s look at how to deal with such a nuisance as a stuck gas pedal.
First, stay calm and try not to panic. Stress and an adrenaline rush can make a difference. However, it’s easy to say but hard to do. But keeping your cool is the only right choice. You will succeed because you will be prepared and will know what to do in this dangerous situation. Assess your position, take a deep breath, and focus on the next step.
Try to push the gas pedal back up with your toe. The car’s engine will gradually slow down if the gas pedal returns to its original position. All that remains now is to park and turn off the engine. Driving this car on your own with a faulty gas pedal is absolutely forbidden . Call a friend or call a tow truck and have the car towed to the nearest service station.

The most correct and sure solution would be to shift the gearbox into neutral and use the standard brake. In neutral, we disconnect the transmission of torque from the engine to the wheels of our car and stop further acceleration of the car. Now that the car is in neutral, you can safely use the standard brake to stop it completely.
This “trick” may not work with an automatic transmission. You will not be able to shift the lever into neutral. Then you will have to apply the standard brake or the handbrake, and then turn off the engine.
Turning off the engine IS NOT ALLOWED , as this will lock the steering wheel and make the car completely uncontrollable. If the engine is fuel-injected, then upon reaching the maximum possible speed, the fuel supply to the engine will stop because the control system is activated. In this case, turn off the engine only after it has completely stopped. On the contrary, turning off a carburetor engine while it is moving IS ALLOWED , as excessive speed of a carburetor engine can lead to its failure, such an engine is not equipped with protection against excessive speed.
We wish you good luck on the roads! Take care of yourself and your loved ones!
