This is one of three replicas of the Modena GT Spyder California featured in the wonderful 1986 film.
In 1986, actor Matthew Broderick starred in the comedy film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off directed by John Hughes. However, the real star of the film was the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder that was featured in the film. This car is considered by many enthusiasts to be one of the most beautiful convertibles ever made by man. “Less than 100 of the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California were made. My dad spent three years restoring this car. “This is his love, his life, and his passion,” the film’s hero Cameron Frye (actor Alan Ruck) famously says as he introduces the car to protagonist Ferris Bueller (actor Matthew Broderick). The luxury car is then destroyed by being dumped in a ravine. Good thing it wasn’t a real Ferrari 250 GT! Crashing a real Ferrari was insanely expensive, even in 1986.
Instead, it was a replica built by Modena Design and Development in El Cajon, California. And one of three cars built for the film is headed to auction. Two working replicas were made for the film, but the real Ferrari was used for close-up shots. Another replica was also made for the final stunt. The design of this car served as an inspiration for many subsequent Ferrari models, and it features a fiberglass body. It is custom-built from a steel frame and features Ferrari-inspired accents including a grille, front fender vents, and hood.
Inside the cabin, there is a wood-wrapped steering wheel, a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror, minimalist gauges, leather seats, and a “vintage radio.” Power comes from a 5.0-liter Ford 351 Windsor V8 engine that allegedly produces 500 horsepower. The V8 is mated to a five-speed manual transmission and “black, corrugated valve covers,” according to Mecum Auctions.
The car will then undergo a nine-month, meticulous “refresh” from one of the founders of Modena Design and will be auctioned off at Mecum’s Monterey, California, auction on August 23.
