“Behind the Wheel”: At a Price of 1 Million Rubles, the Lada Niva Travel Almost Never Breaks Down

Expert of the Za Rulem publication Alexander Vinogradov analyzed the market of affordable all-wheel drive cars costing up to one million rubles and identified the most reliable options.

The updated Renault Duster of the first generation (produced in 2015-2016) fits into the specified price range. This crossover is equipped with one of two gasoline engines – 1.6 or 2 liters. There is also a diesel engine K9K with a volume of 1.5 liters. Most often, such cars come with a manual transmission – a reliable and proven option. However, a 4-speed automatic, according to the expert, can create certain inconveniences in operation.

Another affordable option is the SsangYong Actyon, presented with both a gasoline and a diesel two-liter engine with a capacity of 150 hp. The main problem with this model is the sealant on the welds: with regular off-road driving, the body “plays”, and the sealant begins to crack due to insufficient rigidity of the structure.

You can also find a Toyota RAV4 for a million rubles, but these will be much older examples – produced in 2008-2009. The most popular engine on the Russian market is the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter 1AZ-FE unit with a capacity of 152 hp. It is generally reliable, but requires replacement of the timing chain, usually before the mileage of 200 thousand kilometers.

The selection is closed by the LADA Niva Travel of the latest years of production – 2022-2023. Under the hood is a 1.7-liter naturally aspirated engine with a capacity of 80 hp, paired with a 5-speed manual. Vinogradov emphasizes: it is important to monitor the condition of the timing chain and the gaps in the valve mechanism to avoid premature failures.
